The short answer is:
Probably not.

Once those scheduled dates are filled, additional homeowners can be placed on our waiting list, and we continue completing projects as weather and ground conditions allow.
South Dakota weather ultimately determines when the season ends—not a particular date on the calendar.

Can You Install a Fence in the Fall?
Absolutely.
Fall can actually be an excellent time to install a fence.
September, October, and much of November can provide great working conditions, including cooler temperatures and less disruption to your backyard activities.
And unlike some outdoor projects, fence installation doesn’t necessarily require warm summer temperatures.
The bigger question is what’s happening below the ground.
Frozen Ground Is More Important Than Cold Air
Homeowners sometimes assume that once temperatures drop below freezing, fence installation has to stop.
That’s not necessarily true.
A cold morning doesn’t automatically mean the ground is frozen deeply enough to prevent construction.
The ability to properly install posts depends on factors such as:
- Ground conditions
- Frost depth
- Recent temperatures
- Snow and ice
- Soil conditions
- The type of fence being installed
South Dakota weather can vary dramatically from year to year. One November may remain relatively mild, while another may bring an early stretch of freezing weather.

Concrete can be placed during cooler weather, but temperature matters.
Cold-weather concrete work requires contractors to consider the conditions and use appropriate installation practices. As temperatures become more extreme, concrete placement becomes more complicated and may no longer be appropriate without additional precautions.
This is another reason homeowners should choose a contractor based on quality installation practices, rather than simply finding someone willing to install a fence regardless of the conditions.

What About Snow?
A little snow doesn’t necessarily end fence season either.

We Typically Schedule Fence Projects Through Thanksgiving
Our regular construction calendar generally runs through approximately Thanksgiving.
Those projects receive confirmed places on our schedule.
After Thanksgiving—or Once Those Dates Are Filled
Homeowners can still contact us.
Once our regular late-fall schedule is full, additional projects can be placed on a waiting list.
When weather, ground conditions, and our construction schedule cooperate, we can continue working through projects on that list.
If Winter Arrives Early
Quality comes first.
If conditions no longer allow us to install the fence properly, we’ll wait until conditions improve rather than compromise the project simply to say it was completed.
Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until Spring to Call
This may be the most important takeaway for homeowners considering a fence in August, September, or October:
Don’t assume it’s too late and wait until spring to start the conversation.
Spring is one of the busiest times of year for fence contractors because many homeowners have the exact same idea.
They wait through winter.
The first warm weekend arrives.
Everyone looks outside and thinks:
“We need a fence.”
Suddenly, contractors’ schedules begin filling quickly.
Starting the process in late summer or fall may give you an opportunity to have the fence completed before winter—or at least get your project moving instead of beginning from scratch during the spring rush.

Ultimately, we let safe working conditions and proper construction practices determine when the season ends.
Not the calendar.

There may still be plenty of time.
And even if weather prevents your project from being completed this season, getting started earlier can put you in a much better position when construction conditions return.
